During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe passed through Ellis Island to enter the United States. Augustus Sherman, the Chief Registry Clerk at Ellis Island and an amateur photographer, captured the diverse cultures of those arriving from 1904 to 1924.
